There are few places in the world Gene loves more than Iceland. Gene can often be heard saying, "It is place that has truly touched my soul. Below is a brief review of the trip he took with his mother with lots of pictures at the bottom. The land of Fire and Ice. Over six days we traveled just over 200km (about 130 miles). We road from sea level up through a pass that was 2100ft, then back down to sea level. The first two days were on the beach. The next four days where up and down a set of mountains. I am convinced Tolkin must have visited this part of Iceland and molded the Misty Mountain (in the Hobbit) off of the land we rode through on the second and third day. It rained all six days we rode. (Except on the fifth day it didn't rain. It rained really hard.) The temperature was in the mid 40's the whole time. We slept in farms houses, schools, and mountain huts (which were buildings with one room, cement walls, and no electricity). Other than having to change saddles on the 5th day, the weather was no big deal. To be honest I couldn't image the weather any other way. We traveled with 60 horses in total (rotating two or three times a day), six Icelanders (who owned the horses, served as our guides, cooks, and singing companions), and 11 riders in total. There were 2 American (us), a Norwegian couple (who were a hoot), two Icelanders (a mother and daughter (10?) who were just with us the first two days), a female German law student, a male Dane, a female Swiss, a German who has lived in Canada for the last 20 years, and an English woman. We laughed a lot! We spent a day on both sides of the riding in Rekyevik. It is a very modern (very trendy city). We both bought art work and did lots of window shopping. Below you will find links to 16 (of 263) pictures we took on the trip. I have included both large and small (though much less rich) versions of all the pictures. I would recomend looking at the big pictures, but if your internet connection is grippingly slow the small ones will give you a flavor of the land. The people on the trip (Gene David and Rox) The Animals (Icelandic Horses) The Beach we rode across the first two days
Art is everywhere in Iceland. Here are two of the coolest pieces. |
