What’s it Like to be Gene’s Sister?
My first APeX experience
By Elaine Monterasatelli

The most unfortunate thing about being 5 years younger than my brother Gene David is that the year that he and Brad got APeX off the ground, I headed off to Chicago to attend college. Between the hectic schedule that Gene and Brad have and myself trying to obtain an undergraduate degree before the year 2020, I was never able to see them perform until recently. Yes, I realize that it is hard to believe, that Gene’s own sister was one of the few Christian youths in this country that had not seen APeX perform. The few times that they had been in my area, it was always too far or I had either have a final or midterm the day of their show. But don’t worry I had heard all the stories: performing for audiences as large as 30,000, kids asking for autographs, performing at the Papal Visit, girls with pictures of Gene and Brad on their walls at home, traveling around the country all the time. This all seemed so weird to me; I mean this was Gene and Brad we’re talking about! Yet they seemed to be living like Rock Stars! Finally, in February of this year, APeX came to the Chicagoland area and I was actually free to see them. I was so excited to finally get to see what my brother and Brad has been dedicating their heart and souls to for the past 3 years. I took a few of my friends and went to see the show. I was blown away. Now don’t get me wrong, I have always been so very proud of my brother and knew he was destined to save the world, but I never knew those feelings could possibly grow any stronger until saw him and Brad take the stage. Not only was I moved as his sister, but as a Christian as well. Gene and Brad were offering to these kids in the church that night so much love and understanding it was truly powerful, but what took place after the show is what I can’t seem to get over!
Gene and Brad asked me to sell their tee shirts for them so that they could talk to people after the show. While standing behind the table of shirts, the kids started firing questions at me. “Do you work with them?” “Do you get to travel with them all the time?” “What other stuff do you do for them?” Once I explained to them that I was just Gene’s sister and that they were staying with me and he had asked me to help them out, that’s when the kids got real interested. “What’s it like to be Gene’s sister?” I kept hearing this one question over and over. It was then that I looked over and saw kids actually getting Gene and Brad’s autograph (not that there is anything wrong with that). I even saw a couple adults asking, too! That was when I really started to get freaked out. I love my brother to death. He is one of my favorite people, but I just don’t understand it. Why would they want his autograph? To me he is just a big old dork from Wyoming. I still remember him when he was in sixth grade he would put his clothes on before he went to bed so he wouldn’t have to deal with it in the morning. Or him getting up early as a senior in high school so he could watch Danger Mouse (a wonderful British cartoon) before he went school. The same guy who honestly believed and taught me that WWF Wrestling and Roller Derby were the true American pastime sports was now surrounded by kids wanting his autograph. It was just too much! I love and understand that kids feel a connection with Gene and Brad, but I watched them both grow up so I guess I have a different perspective of these two guys. I guess being his little sister I just don’t get it and I probably never will. I have a feeling that my other brother, Greer, would agree with me that deep down, Gene is a big dork. But he is my brother and that is what I love the most about him. And trust me on this, Greer would be the first to agree with me! I guess this is something that I am just going to have to get use to, my brother the Rock Star.
