Originally appeared in APeX Attack #2 (August 1998)Brad's Book Review

By Brad Farmer

I realize that in our last newsletter my book review was full of very heavy reading- great books, but perhaps a bit deep or theological for some people's taste. (Or maybe you've read all those books by now and are hungry for some more suggestions...) Well, this time I decided to give a review of some lighter reading- some fantastic stories that have great messages within them. Three that I highly recommend are Gletha the Goatlady, My Hermit Uncle John, and Tales of Tony Great Turtle. These three are an autobiographical trilogy by Roger Robbenolt that share the stories of a boy who grows up with an abusive father and learns ways of healing and forgiveness from his encounters with these outcasts of society (Gletha, John, and Tony). Each of these books stands as a great story by itself and they can be read in any order. (I've actually only read the last two.) Another wonderful book that I highly recommend reading for people of all ages and at any point in their walk with Jesus Christ is God Came Near: Chronicles of the Christ by Max Lucado. This book can help a person realize the very humanity of Christ and see Him as a real person who actually walked this earth and not just a myth or a good story. It helps stir up reflections on Jesus' life based on what we know of Him from the Gospels and the history of the time and place that He lived as a man on earth. The reading is very simple, yet lucid and profound. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is another gem. This is a French story about a little prince who visited earth and learned about people and about friendship.
And, finally, again I recommend reading the Holy Bible! Why? Because somebody told me once that it was a good book? Because I feel I need to plug it because we are a Christian ministry? Because I want to look "holy and righteous" in the eyes of our readers? NO! Because I personally have gained so much from reading it, and it continues to be one of the greatest sources of wisdom and consolation in my life. Its words ring true in my heart, in my mind, and in my soul.
