The Punk Rock Sell-Out...aka Brad's Music Review
By Brad Farmer
My music preference does not always follow the "top-40"
(in fact, it hardly ever does). Nor do I fancy myself the type
of cowboy to listen to the country chart-toppers. I do enjoy
some music from these styles, but more times than not, my preference
is usually lumped in what is now called "alternative"
music (a label I hate- but that's another story) and even most
"alternative" isn't my style. I love that hard-driving
punk rock music. I also really enjoy swing jazz, some movie soundtracks
and children's tapes. I also like some gospel music and chants
and other "miscellaneous" styles
I like a bit
of everything, I guess. And there is a lot of really bad punk
music out there, so I guess my real preference can't be labeled
or categorized. But my favorite tapes and CDs, by a large majority,
are punk bands. Also, as some of you might know, I love Jesus
Christ! I very honestly feel that my God is the most important
thing in life. In fact He is the only thing in Life. Everything
else is Death. And we are always saying how we are trying to
live our lives in the imitation of Christ. Well, how many of
you think that if Jesus Christ were sitting here "in the
flesh" right now that He would be "rockin' out"
to the same punk rock that I enjoy? I think He thoroughly enjoys
some of the punk I listen to. In fact, in this past year I have
discovered some punk that I thoroughly enjoy that actually sing
Christ's praises and have wholesome "Christian" lyrics
without compromising the style I love.
If you find that you have some of the same music preference as
I do, or if you just are looking for a new, high-energy, fun
CD that makes you want to dance and move around and sing God's
praises, I have a few suggestions. (Also, if you are the coordinator
of a large youth rally/ conference/ festival/ or anything of
the sort, you may want to look into booking these bands. Kids
love this stuff!) Sorry, I dont have a lot of time or room
to write much about these groups, so, for the most part, youll
just have to take my word that theyre very good .
- Five Iron Frenzy is my personal favorite. This eight-member
group from Denver, CO has two albums out now that I absolutely
love. "Upbeats and Beatdowns" and "our newest
album ever!" are fantastic! Complete with a great horn section,
they produce fresh punk-ska music with well thought, inspirational
lyrics. (available on Sarabellum Records, a division of 5 Minute
Walk Records, Inc., 2056 Commerce Ave., Concord, CA 94520
for a merchandise catalog send SASE to: Five Iron Frenzy, P.O.
Box 2771, Denver, CO 80201)
- The Insyderz, Motor City Ska is my next
recommendation. These boys from Detroit offer great Christian
ska with what I think has more of a "swing" feel to
it.
(available on Gumshoe Records, a Division of FMG, LLC, P.O. Box
28450, Santa Ana, CA 92799
e-mail them at: insyderz@ix.netcom.com)
w The Orange County Supertones are another group you might want
to check out if you're a big ska fan. "Supertones Strike
Back" is the album I like of theirs. I've seen them perform
a number of times, and it's always a pleasure.
(available on BEC Recordings 810 3rd Ave. #410-20, Seattle, WA
98104)
- Vroom x2 is a punk group I recently saw perform in
Virginia and enjoyed their music so much I had to buy their album
Things Not To Do. Another much- listened-to addition
to my collection. (Vroom x2, 502 Wellington Dr., Forest, VA 24551,
e-mail: VROOMROCK@geocities.com)
- Ghotti Hook is another great Christian punk band I
enjoy and have seen in concert at least twice, but have yet to
get their CD. They're worth looking into. I never knew such wonderful
"Christian Punk" existed and I truly appreciate the
creators of this music.
Thank you and God bless. I know there's lots more out there
that I haven't mentioned, and if you happen to know of a group
that you think I might enjoy, please drop me a line or send a
sample of their music. None of these groups or Record Labels
have paid me any sort of promotional fee, but I would like to
promote them in the interests of those out there like myself
that love Christ and also enjoy this style of music and would
love to combine the two
